Club President's Message

Julie Brandle
member photo
In September 1987, Pamela Kiltau was encouraged to join Rotary.  If she hadn't been, I wouldn't be writing this as our Club's 7th female president today, 30 years later!  To me, it is an honor to serve our Club as your President, to her she was blazing trails for women in our area to embrace "Service above Self" and male Club members to embrace the idea of welcoming women to our Club. What a collaboration the members were about to embark on by welcoming women. From the sound of it, it wasn't easy.  Though many members didn't even think it was a big deal, some members left the club in protest. I think they caught on to what a big deal it was in fact to the community when the Akron Beacon Journal ran some mention, article or otherwise, for 5 STRAIGHT DAYS!! I want to thank Pam for her presentation on the History of Women in Rotary and for Roger Read and Steve Schecter who helped tell the story and encouraged her all the way. Because you see, without men AND women in the club, we couldn't do all that we do in our community without eachother.

Thank you all for what you do each day for our community.  Whether it be through Rotary, or countess other service organizations in which members are involved. Or whether it be sharing your time, talent, or treasure you are doing great things in our community and beyond.  I am proud to be along side you all in service.

Rotary Cares

The purpose of Rotary Cares is to show our support for Akron Rotary members and their families when dealing with the loss of a loved one, the hardship of illness and also to celebrate the joy of a new baby, job, marriage or other events in their lives. Please be sure to email me with any news you would like placed here.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Akron Rotarian Mary A. Weaver. Mary's husband, Stuart (Stu) Terrass passed away October 11th.  Memorials may be made to the Akron Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs.  Cards may be sent to: 983-3 Edgemere Ct., Copley, OH  44321

Read To Me Day

Rotary Club of Akron will support the United Way Read to Me Day program again this year. This is the seventh year that our Club has participated in this very worthwhile project.

We need 17 volunteers who will read to the children at Sam Salem Elementary School on November 2nd.  CLICK HERE FOR THE SIGN UP DETAILS for each of the classes needing a volunteer. Teachers can be contacted by email, and several have suggested books as reading material for the volunteer.

Readers need to bring the reading material with them and should arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled time, to sign in at the office.  A library or bookstore can be very helpful in selecting an appropriate book. If you do purchase a book or bring one from home, donating it to the class is always appreciated. This enables the teacher to finish it later with the class.

Rotarian's always find this to be a very rewarding experience. If you can participate please email me (click here) ASAP, specifying the classroom, your preferred start time, and if possible an alternative room and time choice.

Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. We will keep you up-to-date on our progress.

The Road to Leadership in Rotary!

Good leaders make the Rotary Club of Akron successful, thriving and fun!

The road to leadership in Akron Rotary starts by being engaged.  Attending weekly meetings is a fantastic way to discover how to make a difference through Rotary.  Is attending the weekly meeting challenging?  There are alternatives! After-hours socials, volunteer opportunities, Chili Open, various committees, serving as a mentor or helping with international humanitarian projects.
Committee members serve on the Membership, Chili Open, Communications & Public Image, Youth Exchange, Programming, Scholarships, Service Projects, Rotary International Foundation and more.

Chairs oversee their respective committees or projects. They convene and run meetings, coordinate work and report their activities to the Board of Directors.  Typically, new chairs are appointed in June.

Directors guide Akron Rotary towards a sustainable future through sound, ethical and legal governance.  They work to secure opportunities and resources to advance Akron Rotary Club’s mission.

Soon, the Nominating Committee will meet to develop the slate of candidates for the 2018-2020 Board of Directors.  Nominees come from the pool of engaged Rotarians.  If you’re interested in discussing how you can serve Rotary, talk with a member of the Nominating Committee (before November 1st for Board of Directors): Jeff Sitz, Chair; Sandy Naragon, Bill Manby, Jr., Shon Christy or Lance Chima.

Ronald McDonald House Service Project Update

On Saturday, October 21st, the Women of Rotary are stepping up and out to prepare an evening meal for the families of loved ones who are receiving much needed medical care at our Akron Childrens Hospital. The team under the leadership of Lynda Farkas consists of Lynda, Mella Castner, Sandy Naragon, and Jan Ryan.

Word has it they are keeping their special recipe a secret. 😊  With strong confidence they believe their meal will be one for the record books and a challenge to top for other Rotarians who are looking to exercise their culinary skills.

Future dates for preparing meals are Jan 20th, April 21st, July 21st, and October 20th, 2018. Come one and come all for the opportunity to bless families in need and to have a delightful experience with other Rotary family members. If you are interested in serving please reach out to Steve Buie by phone – 330-701-2970 or via email sbuie@learningrx.net
