WEEKLY CLUB MEETINGS AND EVENTS

Our Club is following the order of
Ohio Governor DeWine.
------------------------------------
Our next meeting is slated for
Friday, April 28th at 11:45 am at Portage Country Club but please watch the website, newsletter and

In addition to the District 4-Way Speech Contest and meetings, the following activities have been canceled for the District and Rotary International:
2020 DISTRICT CONFERENCE, DLA & GOVERNORS DINNER
Our District has the unfortunate necessity to cancel all activities for the District Conference, DLA and Past District Governors Dinner that had been scheduled at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls on April 23,24 and 25 2020.
As you all know COVID-19 has virtually shut down public life.
It is the primary goal of Rotary to prevent disease and suffering. It is also our goal to protect the well-being of our members, families and friends. At this time that must be our only goal. Your Executive Committee understands the tremendous effort that has already been undertaken to plan the conference and its component events and we extend our thanks and appreciation for that effort to all involved.
Pursuant to the instructions from Rotary International and our own by-laws the necessary business of the District and Presidents Elect will be done through remote means. Pat Myers and the LEAD Committee are looking at further training opportunities for P.E.’s.
Thank you for your help and support.

Congratulations to the Akron Rotary Club/Akron Rotary Camp for the generous $5,000.00 donation from the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship Tournament, July 2019.
A friend of Akron Rotary member, Lynda Farkas, Karen Keasling, member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, longtime volunteer of the tournament and Tournament Board member immediately thought of the Camp as her choice of charities to receive the donation.
During the February 27th “Thaw” we celebrated the news with the help of Rotarians; Dan Reynolds, Mella Castner, Jan Ryan, Lynda Farkas and Karen Keasling.
Our thanks are extended to Karen for thinking of the Akron Rotary Camp.
Due to the generosity of our 1,000 volunteers, $825,000 went to Northeast Ohio non-profits!
Due to the success of the 2019 Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS additional funds became available for charitable proceeds. Northern Ohio Golf Charities Foundation recently announced that ten past grant recipients were selected to receive a one-time discretionary grant. We commend these groups on the work they are doing to improve the lives of residents of our community and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to help fund their mission.
The selected charities include; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Summit, Medina and Stark Counties, City of Akron Fire Department’s REACH Program, Elves and More of Northeast Ohio, Embrace Clinic and Care Center, Embracing Futures, Faithful Servants Care Center, First Tee of Canton, Open M, Rotary Camp for Children with Special Needs ($5,000.00), and Summit Choral Society.
The purpose of Rotary Cares is to show our support for Akron Rotary members and their families when dealing with the loss of a loved one, the hardship of illness and also to celebrate the joy of a new baby, job, marriage or other events in their lives. Please be sure to email me (click here) with any news you would like placed here.
Congratulations Kimberly Brandle
Kimberly is the daughter of our Past Club President, Julie Brandle, and her husband Steven. Kimberly was nominated as BGSU Women of Distinction! She worked as a counselor at our Rotary Camp and continues to volunteer time here when in Akron.
For the past three years, she has also participated in Dance Marathon (which has recently been re-branded as Falcon Miracles). She has served on the Participant Relations Core Committee, as the silver morale captain, and now as the AD of Internal Affairs!
They fund raise for Toledo Mercy Children's Hospital all year long, and end with two celebrations, Ziggython and Bike for Tikes.
Please consider donating to help this amazing young professional reach her goal for this benefit. Now more than ever the hospitals need your love and support as they battle through this. ❣️
On March 2, 2020, at age 91, Dick passed away peacefully with his loving wife at his side in his home in Bath, Ohio. Dick was born on October 16, 1928 to C. Nelson Wright and Inez Marie Wright at People’s Hospital in Akron. As an only child he enjoyed many adventures while growing up. His trips with his father to Canada and to the Four Corners out West where he spent time with Navajo and Hopi Native Americans and “cowboys” were not only fun, but also encouraged his interest in photography which stayed with him all of his life.
Richard graduated with honors from California Institute of Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1950 and from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School in 1952 with a Master’s in Business Administration.
Dick’s entire career was spent at Wright Tool Company, started by his father. In 1952 he started as an engineer, was promoted to Chief Engineer and Purchasing Agent in 1954, and in 1957 he became Vice President. He became President in 1967 and retired from that position in January 2007. He remained Chairman of the Board until 2012.
Dick and his wife Dianne traveled to all seven continents, over 40 countries, and the Arctic North Pole. In addition to adventure travel, he enjoyed Heli-Skiing in the Banff area of Canada. He amassed over 12 million vertical feet over several years of skiing with Canadian Mountain Holidays.
In recent years Dick was a member of the Unitarian
Universalist Church of Akron in Fairlawn after many years at First Congregational Church in Akron. He enjoyed his membership and dining with his wife, friends and business associates at Portage Country Club for 68 years.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents in 1972, and his son, Bruce in 1992. He is sadly missed by his son, Robert (Lucinda) of Baltimore, MD; Dianne, his wife of 27 years; and the mother of his sons, Janet (Kime) Wright.
For the last five years Dick was fortunate to have a special caregiver to keep him very active with daily walks, lunches, swimming and other adventures. Bruce Anderson, thank you for all your dedication and care of Dick.

A short email to update you on the “Coin Boxes” and to pleasantly remind you to keep saving your change – even while we are not meeting – this will help ease the “overflow” in your home Piggy Banks! We can still collect through May 31st, 2020!
Hope you will join me and put forth the good deeds of our Akron Rotary Club.
