Celebrating the Life of Sydney Heersink
“Coping with a cancer diagnosis is about standing in that fear and saying I choose to live a beautiful, passionate, impactful life,” Sydney Heersink, December 5, 2018.
“It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share that our beloved Sydney passed away peacefully” was posted on Facebook September 4, 2019.
Sydney Heersink, a former Firestone High School student, connected via Skype to the Rotary Club of Akron September 16, 2014, to report on her Rotary Youth Exchange experience in France 2013-2014. She gave accolades to the club for supporting her in her effort to study and live abroad. She was transformed from the shy, quiet girl in the high school classroom to the outgoing, willing to speak to others in a foreign language that she mastered beautifully. She was extremely grateful to the Rotary Club of Akron. In the years following, she returned to France to study political science at the University de Reims.
Sydney spent the last year exploring New York City with her dad, family, and friends all the while fighting a courageous battle of stage IV endometrial cancer.
Syd’s love for life, her studies, and desire to see the world were infectious and inspired those around her. She faced every new obstacle with a smile and determination to get through it. Throughout the past few months, while undergoing countless surgeries, radiation, new chemotherapies and trying to maneuver in a wheelchair in Manhattan, the confidence she had in herself never wavered.
Sydney lived a beautiful, passionate and impactful life and is going to be with all of us always. Our “Happy Dollars” collection September 10 of $185 will contribute to her GoFundMe.
If you’d like to contribute to help with Sydney’s funeral expenses and remaining medical bills, please consider donating to her GoFundMe. Link in bio and below.
Zoé (Belgium) and Elin (S.Korea) are welcomed at the Rotary Club of Akron as they exchange banners with President Pat O’Neill. Host Dad Tom Gedelian uses his Happy Dollar to welcome Elin to our Rotary Club and his family!

Everyone is welcome to join us for the conversation. The cost is $13.00 per person and includes lunch. Location: Portage Country Club.
On the TableGreater Akron is a one-of-a-kind initiative where thousands of diverse residents from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds gather to share a meal and discuss meaningful ideas to strengthen our community. It’s an opportunity to shape our region into a strong, vibrant, safe and dynamic place to live and work. This project is part of On the Table, a national civic engagement initiative supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and initially developed by The Chicago Community Trust.
Anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Summit or Medina counties is invited to host or participate in a mealtime conversation with their family, friends, neighbors or colleagues. Conversations are held in person at locations such as a library, church, neighborhood restaurant, office break room or around your own kitchen table.
We know that big ideas can spring from small conversations and that people invest in what they help create. When we come together face-to-face to find common ground on community issues and challenges that matter to people, powerful things can happen.
