Club President's Message

John Margida

Hello Akron Rotary Club,

At the Club meeting on this past Tuesday we celebrated Steve Shechter leaving our Rotary Club after over 32 years of amazing leadership and service. We wish Steve and his wife Cherie the best of luck on their move to Asheville, NC. They will be always welcomed back to see us!

Also, we are very proud to say, this past Saturday our club came in fourth place at the annual Dragon Boat Races. Witnessing this myself, I saw an incredible team working together was very impressive!

It was Rotary night at the Akron Rotary Camp Cookout on July 26th.  There was an outpouring of Rotarians visiting Rotary Camp to have dinner with the campers and counselors. It was a beautiful summer evening on Rex Lake to showcase our Camp.

President John Margida welcomed District 6630 Governor Beverly Ghent-Skrzynski, President Peter DeSouza from Rotary Club of Aurora, President Larry Lohman from Rotary Club of Kent, President Evan McCauley from Rotary Club of Hudson and President Dean Timmons from Rotary Club of Northampton-Cuyahoga Valley.

Akron Rotarians attending were Julie Brandle, Steve Buie, Mella Castner, Jack Harig, Vivian Harig, Dr. Doug Hausknecht, Ben Heckerman, Dan Reynolds, John Reyes and Wanda Whipkey.

Students from the Akron Rotary Club’s North High School Interact Club were on hand visiting Rotary Camp for the first time and pitched in to serve dinner.

Our Club meeting welcomed speaker Debbie Reiss, Director of Guardians Advocating Child Safety & Protection. Thank you Debbie for showing your true passion for education for awareness for children.

We look forward to hearing next week’s speaker Shelly Sprang of Pegasus Farms.

Yours in Rotary Service —

John Margida, Club President

Wavemakers REALLY made waves!!

On Saturday, July 28th, the Akron Rotary dragonboat team "Wavemakers" surprised the competition by cutting 5 seconds off of last year's performance and made it to the finals despite having a collision in race one which broke our dragon's head and threw our drummer Jen into the lake.  At the end of the final regular race, we were 4th overall out of 38 teams.  We actually made the finals for the first time in four our four year history and finished third in the Community division!

Please find attached a photo of the broken dragon along with Capt'n Rob and our drummer Jan (a friend of Akron Rotarian Chris Whitehead.)  Wanda has other photos should you want.

Best,
Rob

Cornhole Tournament Brought the FUN!!

The 9th Annual Charity Cornhole Tournament benefitting Akron Rotary Camp was held this past Saturday in the Huntington Club Level of Akron U’s InfoCision Stadium.  Six teams in the Ringers Division and thirty teams in the Recreational Division all competed for bragging rights, while having fun! Congratulations to all the teams that placed and to ‘Hole in my Corn-ea’ (Jaime and Scott Kolligian) and ‘TNC 2’ (Jeff Beattie and Drew Thomas) that won 1st place in their divisions.

Rotarian Marcia Holcomb with her two granddaughters also competed. Although they didn’t place, they won the most creative team name as ‘The Jelly Bean Baggers.’  More than $11,600 were raised for Akron Rotary Camp and we are grateful to all the sponsors, volunteers and organizers for their continued support.

Special shout-out to Scott Kolligian and Dr. Doug Hausknecht for making sure the event was running smoothly and securing all the volunteers.

We are looking forward to continue this event in years to come!

Rotary Cares

The purpose of Rotary Cares is to show our support for Akron Rotary members and their families when dealing with the loss of a loved one, the hardship of illness and also to celebrate the joy of a new baby, job, marriage or other events in their lives. Please be sure to email me with any news you would like placed here.

With deepest sympathy
Our prayers are with Hugh Alpeter and his family. His brother, James "Andy" Alpeter passed away July 25th after a courageous battle with cancer.  Andy was a member of the Dundee Township Rotary in Illinois and introduced Hugh to Rotary.  Condolences may be sent to Hugh Alpeter at PO Box 456, Bath, OH 44210.

Congratulations
To Shon Christy who received some tremendous PR for the new company Unbox Ability when he appeared on a segment of Fox 8 News featuring the new company.
